DW Choices

When you think of Wisconsin, certain things quickly come to mind, like our love of the Green Bay Packers, the best Cheese in the world, friendly WI residents and of course our love for barley and hops products. Because of this, Wisconsin has become a hot spot for Brew Pubs, and we list our favorite places to sip the suds around the state.

Favorite Wisconsin Brew Pubs

Great Dane Pub - Madison & Fitchburg, WI

Our Madtown brewery pick is located in the heart of downtown Madison, and in the outskirt community of Fitchburg. The Great Dane Pub & Brewing Company offers a great opportunity to enjoy numerous tasty brews as well as a great menu to satisfy your hunger. We recommend their made from scratch deep fried cheese curds to go along with your brew of choice!

Titletown Brewing Company - Green Bay, WI

Our Green Bay, WI stop on the Brew Pub Tour takes us to a Green Bay landmark, no not Lambeau Field, but the
Dousman Street Depot which is now the Titletown Brewing Company. This historic location was officially named to the National Register of Historic Places in December of 1999. While there enjoy a great menu, atmosphere and brew along the Fox River in Downtown Green Bay. How can you not love a place with a beer named the "Johnny "Blood" McNally Red"!

South Shore Brewery - Ashland, WI

Since 1995 South Shore Brewery on Lake Superior's South Shore (thus the name) has been brewing up some of the best beers to come from Wisconsin's northern coastline. If you are in the area we suggest that this Brew pub is a must stop. Visitors will find a casual inviting atmosphere with excellent food at the Deep Water Grille. (Webmaster note: They also make a sweet Bloody Mary I might add!)

Northwoods Brewpub & Grill - Eau Claire, WI

Now don't get us wrong, when DW heads to the Chippewa Valley we always remember our friends at Leinenkugel's, and we recommend a tour of the famous Leine Lodge, but also include time for a stop at the Northwoods Brewpub and Grill in Eau Claire, WI. It was the first Microbrewery/Brewpub in West Central Wisconsin and continues to satisfy those who visit today. We suggest trying the Lil' Bandit Brown Ale or a Floppin' Crappie!

Brewery Creek Pub & Inn - Mineral Point, WI

Small intimate pub with some very tasty beer. Take the backroads to Mineral Point for a beautiful drive through the driftless region of the state and smell the "dairy air"! Favorite hang out of local artists, musicians and
interesting characters! Good Food, Great deserts, and if you have too many brewski's you can spend the night!

Rowland's Calumet Brewing Co. - Chilton, WI

Rowland's Calumet Brewery, is a perfect example of a family owned and operated brewing business. They are famous for their small batches of quality handcrafted beer and gourmet sodas they serve in their Pub, which is housed in Chilton's historic former firehouse. The best time of the year to visit Rowland's Calumet Brewery is when it hosts the Wisconsin Micro-Brewer's Beer Fest yearly in May. Just be sure to bring a designated driver when you come.

The Grumpy Troll Brew Pub - Mount Horeb, WI

When you talk about places around the state that you always feel like you can walk in and feel like home, the Grumpy Troll Pub is definitely one of them. Besides having a great beer selection and a huge menu (and some of the best burgers around) the people are friendly and make all of their visitors feel right at home. If you are traveling through this area of SW Wisconsin, place the Grumpy Troll Pub on your travel itinerary.

Hereford & Hops Steakhouse & Brewpub - Wausau, WI

Now here is a perfect example of when you combine two of man's favorite activities and put them in one place. Great beer and grillin! Hereford and Hops was central Wisconsin's first brewpub. They continue Wausau's rich brewing heritage with many tasty brews being offered. And when you combine this with a great steakhouse atmosphere and huge menu you have found a winner in central Wisconsin!

Milwaukee Ale House - Milwaukee, WI

Heading to the town famous for it's beer? Well on your next trip to the brew city, be sure to head to the Historic Third Ward and to the Milwaukee Ale House. It’s located along the River Walk, and offers of course great beer, an excellent atmosphere in an old brick and timber warehouse building, live music and terrific food. Nothing beats a cold beer in their outdoor seating area along the Milwaukee River on a hot summer night!

DW Restaurant Pick of the Month
May, 2008

Riverstone Restaurant & Tavern - Eagle River, WI

Every month we highlight a restaurant in Wisconsin that has superior food, atmosphere and service, and today’s pick is one of my favorites in the entire Northwood’s. It’s called Riverstone and it’s located in the heart of Eagle River on Railroad Street. This is a restaurant that embraces the unusual. Riverstone has my favorite appetizer in Wisconsin and I do not say that lightly. It’s the Wisconsin Artisan Cheese Board, with 6 unique cheeses made in the Old World Tradition, in small batches. The cheeses start from the most mild – like feta, and work their way up to Stravecchio and Hook’s Blue Cheese out of Mineral Point. Other noteworthy appetizers include walleye cakes with cucumber wasabi and dill caper sauces and Hearth Bruschetta. Main dishes include prime rib, Mediterranean style lamb, baby back ribs, citrus glazed breast of duck and wild Alaskan King salmon. Desserts are a specialty, with their famous chocolate fountain, an old fashioned bread pudding, and an order-ahead dessert – the baked apple grand marnier with pastry cap and real whipped cream. Riverstone is located in a vintage building that features an 1880’s oak back bar, pressed tin ceiling, vintage tiled floors, stone fireplace, and a state-of-the-art exhibition kitchen. It has an award winning wine list, and a friendly staff. Congratulations to owners Ron and Cindy Meinholz and the entire Riverstone crew for creating one of the Northwood’s best restaurants!
