One shining example is found in the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans in western Shawano County. The Stockbridge-Munsee’s journey to Wisconsin is a testament to their courage and perseverance. Today, the Mohican Nation is thriving and they welcome you to learn more about their culture. Come celebrate with them as they join together in dance and song at their annual Pow Wow – held the second weekend of August. The natural surroundings of the Stockbridge-Munsee Nation are filled with outdoor activities that will bring out the adventurous spirit in everyone. The area boasts some of the best rivers in the state for whitewater rafting—you’ll be thrilled by the challenging currents, waves and heart stopping rapids as you make your way down the Menominee River. But the fun and excitement doesn’t end when you get to shore, it continues as you take a ride on Western Shawano County’s beautiful trail system. There’s sure to be a trail suited to fit everyone’s needs. The Stockbridge-Munsee tribe is also known for great entertainment, especially at the North Star Mohican Casino. There you’ll find tons of gaming excitement, including bingo, slots, blackjack and other great table games. When you’re done playing a hand in the casino, make sure to experience the Indus Room. This 700-seat theater hosts top local and national artists who perform everything from exciting rock ‘n roll to down-home country.
