Marinette County, WI
2008 DW Destination

Encompassing an area larger than the state of Rhode Island, Marinette County is known as "the waterfall capitol of Wisconsin." Both the city and the county are named in honor of “Queen Marinette,” a businesswoman and fur trader who set up post on the banks of the Menominee River. The early history of the area is one of fur traders and lumber barons who saw the area’s rich wilderness and resources as opportunity. Today, visitors to Marinette County will find nearly endless opportunities for outdoor recreation and adventure. With nearly 2,000 miles of streams, over 200 lakes and easy access to Lake Michigan, anglers and water enthusiasts alike can find adventure nearby in whichever direction they choose. The vast forestland is perfect for hiking, biking, or ATVing in the warmer months, and lends itself to snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or snowmobiling in the winter. If the latter activity is your idea of a perfect Wisconsin pastime, consider yourself in good company when in Marinette County! Hundreds of miles of carefully groomed paths lend themselves to eager snowmobilers of every age and experience level. Join a riding club or simply drop in on one of the many snowmobiling-themed events Marinette County offers every winter. Whether your taste is for sun or snow, swimming or snowmobiling, Marinette County has something for everyone.
