Fort Crawford Museum

Fort Crawford stood guard over Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, from 1816 until 1856. Now, the Fort Crawford Museum displays the history of the fort, its city, and the many lives that crossed here. Visit us May through October for a self-guided tour or attend one of our upcoming events.

Prairie Dog Blues Festival

Why do people keep coming back from all over the U.S. to the Prairie Dog? It's one of the most laid back festivals out there. The Festival is held on historic St. Feriole Island, right on the Mississippi River and nestled between jagged cliffs and green hills untouched by the Ice Age! Great food and beer. Vendors selling hand-made products and camping right on site. Motel shuttles run to all motels in town.

The Villa Louis Carriage Classic

The Villa Louis Carriage Classic is a pleasure driving show held on the beautiful grounds of the Villa Louis Historic Site in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. This show hosts some of the finest carriage driving competition the Midwest has to offer, with over 100 different turnouts coming from throughout the Midwest. It features a wide range of divisions, providing a first class experience for novice and experienced whips alike.

Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge

This 261 mile Refuge was established by an Act of Congress on June 7, 1924, as a refuge and breeding place for migratory birds, fish, wildlife, and plants. The north end begins at the confluence
of the Mississippi and Chippewa rivers near Wabasha, Minnesota and the south end is near Rock Island, Illinois. Just over 240,000 acres of wooded islands, marshes, and backwaters comprise the Refuge.

Wyalusing State Park

At Wyalusing State Park, you can camp 500 feet above the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers. One of Wisconsin's oldest parks, Wyalusing features Indian burial mounds, canoe trail, bird watching. It's a place to go for fishing, boating, bicycling, picnicking, and enjoying nature. There are an interpretive center and four historical markers within the park.

Prairie du Chien's History

Prairie du Chien is filled with sites of historic significance. Its recorded history dates back to June 17, 1673, when Marquette and Joliet traveled the Wisconsin River to the Area. The two were the first Europeans to see the Mississippi River. The area gets its name “Prairie du Chien” from the French; it means Prairie of the Dog. They named the area after an early Fox chief who lived on the prairie.
